Adopt-a-Mailbox

SUCA launched its ADOPT-A-MAILBOX campaign at the Annual General Meeting on October 13, 2005. This program is meant to combat the unwanted advertising and litter (garbage and junk mail) that gathers around the Super Mailboxes in the community. The ADOPT-A-MAILBOX program is a 1 year commitment that residents can make to keep their local mailbox free and clear of advertising and litter.

Call for Volunteers
The program was very well received at the AGM, with 3 residents committed to adopting their local mailboxes. We have also received interest from a couple of students who want to earn hours towards their volunteer commitments for the school year. SUCA will provide students with 1 hour for the initial mailbox cleanup and 15 minutes a week (1 hr per month) for each month the mailbox is adopted.

Student Volunteers
Students who are interested in adopting a mailbox should download the Adopt-a-Mailbox Student Volunteer Initiative document for review by their teacher or volunteer coordinator. Once approved by the school please contact SUCA to begin the program.

Cleanup Kit
SUCA is hopeful that we will be able to provide all volunteers, who adopt a local mailbox, with a useful cleanup kit. We have applied to the Town of Markham for funding under the Markham Environmental Sustainability Fund (MESF). The town is currently reviewing our application.

We need YOU!
We have over 30 mailboxes in our community. We therefore require the help of many more of our residents. If you are interested in the ADOPT-A-MAILBOX program please . You can also 'unofficially' ADOPT-A-MAILBOX by making your own personal commitment to our community and keep your local mailbox clean. All of your neighbours will really appreciate your efforts!
